Werk aan de Kerk
(Work at the Church)

Meg leading devotional

Val, Annalise, Jessica, Ben & Jules

Saturday we got everything started in the church. We began with a devotional for our team, some of the leaders of the Diepenbeek church, and Jessica Periera and three of her friends, Annalise, Ben and Jules. Jessica is a missionary with Young Life who is from Manassas, VA but has been serving in the French speaking area of Belgium for three years. Today was my (Megs) turn to lead the devotional. We read from Ephesians 6:10-17 and discussed the spiritual struggle – which Paul talks about in very real wrestling terms – that is part of the work we are doing with the two churches and the importance of the armor God gives us. But I think my favorite part of it was closing in prayer and having the prayer be English, Flemmish and French. Also, Ben and Jules are from Australia, so even our English speakers had variation. We can’t understand everything that is being said in the prayers, but the heart and tone are the same in all. And ‘Amen’ is the same for us all! It was a little taste of Heaven with the different languages praising God together.

Jim sealing (I think?) the back wall of the church

For our work of the day Milt, Val, Hugh, Don and Jim stayed with Jessica and her friends. They along with Valare, Eddie, and Jan spent the day scraping paint and then sealing the walls to prepare for painting. They accomplished much more in one day than we expected.

The leaflet team, minus Chananja

Then Erin, Sheri, Scott and I went with Martin and Chananja and spent the day walking Diepenbeek (it felt like the whole villiage by the end!) putting flyers in mailboxes for an Evangelical speaker who will be coming to speak next Saturday. By the end of the day we were tired – but in a good physical way. But we also felt a deeper camaraderie with our brothers and sisters in Christ after serving with them for the day. It is amazing how with Christ things like language, culture, countries and oceans seem so trivial.
After a short rest – which turned into a nap for Scott and I! – we had dinner with our respective hosts. Then we all went back out for an evening of bowling! Don rocked bowling with the high score for the night, but Scott gave him a run for his money. We were also joined by more people from the church for the night and generally laughed and cheered for each other through the evening.

Keep us in prayer. We are meeting many new faces and truly want to be the heart, voice, hands and feet of Christ while we are here.
